Day 1 and 2 morning

We start our adventure in Negombo. After your arrival you will be directly placed into the real Sri Lankan local life of the buzzing fishing town Negombo. In the soft afternoon light we will visit Negombo Lagoon and the Dutch Canal. You can watch the local fishermen drying the fish in the sun. We will arrange a sunset shoot with one of the traditional sailing boats with open sails.

(We will meet in the afternoon, your arrival shouldn't be later than 1 pm. If you want to arrive one or two days earlier, we will happily arrange accommodation and transfer for you, just let us know.)

Next early morning we can watch the sailing boats on the open sea - a real spectacle with their traditional sails.

After a breakfast we will make our way to famous Sigiriya (3 hours drive).

1 night in Negombo

Day 2 afternoon/evening

Discover the fascinating Lion's Rock in Sigiriya beyond the beaten tracks. We will show you some hidden places and point of views. In the evening, when the crowds are gone, we will make our way up to the top to experience a wonderful sunset and to shoot some photos in the soft evening light in the water gardens.

2 nights in Sigiriya

Day 3

In the morning we will arrange a model shoot with a mahut and his elephant in front of the Lion's Rock.
We then head towards Polonnaruwa, the royal ancient city with many temples and stupas to admire (drive 1,5 hours).
In the evening we will climb Pidurangala to watch the sun setting behind the Lion's Rock (30 mins climb).

Day 4

This will be an early start as we want to capture the rising sun behind the scenic landscape of Kandalama lake with its dead trees and mountains (25 mins drive). We continue our day with packed breakfast on the way to Dambulla, the UNESCO world heritage cave temples (20 mins drive).
We then head towards Kandy (2 hours drive) to stroll along the shore of the scenic Kandy lake and capture the sunset behind the palm tree island.

1 night in Kandy

Day 5

Since the morning light is the photographer's best friend - we will have an other early morning to watch the rising sun at Kandy lake.

After breakfast we will drive to Maskeliya to capture the setting sun at Adam's Peak (3 hours drive). On the way we will pass beautiful tea hills, green landscape and local tea pluckers at work, which will provide us with many photo stops.

2 nights in Maskeliya

Day 6 and 7

If weather permits - we can have either today or the next day (or of course both mornings, up to you) a sunrise shoot along the shore of the Maussakelle Reservoir. We will watch local life in small villages far away from any tourist crowds. We can watch tea pluckers during their work on the field, weighing the tea and on their way home. We can capture the light trails up to the peak of Adam's Peak. We can discover fantastic views of Castlereigh reservoir and Hatton with the Warleigh church, while we are making our way to St Clair falls (1,5 hours drive).

Day 7 afternoon

In the golden light of the late afternoon we arrange something very special for you - a model shoot with some tea pluckers in front of the famous St Clair falls.

Afterwards we will make our way to Nuwara Eliya to stay there overnight.

1 night in Nuwara Eliya

Day 8

In the (not so early this time) morning you will take a train ride in one of the most famous trains of the world - to Ella. During the ride you can take plenty of photos of the amazing landscape or the train itself during the winding track. What a special adventure to ride on a train with open doors, hanging out with your camera... (train ride 4 hours).
After arrival in Ella we will have lunch and will make our way up to Little Adam's Peak (30 mins  walk) where we will be rewarded with a spectacular view and a hopefully as spectacular sunset.

1 night in Ella

Day 9

In the morning we can watch two trains on the famous Nine arches bridge from different point of views (30 mins walk). After visiting the Ravana Falls we will make our way to Kirinda (2 hours drive) to watch the evening sun at Kirinda beach and its Buddhist Temple.

2 nights in Tissamahara

Day 10

Today we will have our own private full day Jeep safari (including lunch) to watch the wildlife of Yala National Park. Leopards, elephants, buffaloes, crocodiles and many birds can be watch and captured with your long lens. The landscape is also very scenic with the elephant rock and the wetlands.

Day 11

In the early morning we will take advantage of the soft light and discover the picture perfect Tissa Lake before we will continue our way to the southernmost point of Sri Lanka - Dondra (2 hours drive). On our way we will pass scenic coastal landscapes, tropical beaches and traditional fishing boats. At Dondra we will capture the evening sun and the setting sun from different point of views towards the lighthouse.

1 night Matara

Day 12

The soft morning light will help us to capture beautiful temple island Parevi Duwa, before we are making our way along the South Coast to Mirissa (30 mins drive). In Mirissa we will visit the traditional fishing harbour with colourful boats and may watch the hard work of the fishermen. We will have enough time to stop along the coast in Weligama and Ahangama for some picturesque impressions of tropical beach life with surfers, beautiful islands and traditional boats.

Day 12 evening

One highlight of our trip will be for sure the stilt fishermen, probably the most photographed people in Sri Lanka. We will arrange a model shoot with 5 fishermen for you before and during sunset, so you will have enough time to take photos of this iconic Sri Lankan life in all different kinds of point of views.

2 nights Unawatuna/Galle

Day 13

If weather permits, we can have a sunrise shoot on one of the beautiful tropical beaches in the Unawatuna/Koggala area. During the day you will have plenty of time to discover the Portuguese/Dutch Galle Fort. For sunset we will take you to the Japanese Peace Pagoda, a fantastic photo subject due to shape and white colour.

For our goodbye dinner we will choose a restaurant directly on the beach in Unawatuna to say farewell to the Indian Ocean.

Day 14

Now it is time to say goodbye and we will drive you to the Colombo International Airport (2,5 hours drive), time depending on your departure. We are sure you will have hundreds of photos in your luggage.

For those who want to stay longer at the South Coast and enjoy some relaxing and camera free days - we may of course arrange accommodation and airport transfer for you, just let us know.

Joana Kruse

Always good light!

Hello, I am Joana, an award winning landscape and travel photographer. I have already lived in Switzerland, Italy, Germany and am now based in England. New inspiration and different cultures are so important to me and I hope this can be seen in my photography.

I am travelling around the world each month to shoot photos for travel magazines and to guide enthusiastic photographers to the best photo spots. My work is published worldwide in newspapers, magazines, travel guides, websites, book covers, calendars etc. In South West England I am running a photo group with more than 900 members.

During my photo tuition I will always make sure that it will be never a boring classroom atmosphere. You will learn on location with practical support and advice, not technical theory. Your improvement will be seen immediately and from day to day your photos will become better.
But I will also leave you in peace to the right time and give you the space you need to create your personal masterpiece.

I know Sri Lanka with the eyes of a photographer and will make sure, that you get the best out of your trip. Instead of tourist snaps you will come home with great landscape photography art.

Can't wait to shoot with you!

 Ayu- bo -wan!

Hello, I am Amith and I will be your local guide and driver on this unique photo tour.

Ayu- bo -wan means “May you live long”. This is the traditional way to welcome anyone to Sri Lanka, our home, and when meeting you for the first time.

I am a national freelance tour guide since 2009. I feel honoured to introduce travellers to the wonders of Sri Lanka from ancient archaeological sites to our national parks and tropical beaches, offering an amazing range of photo opportunities.

I know my country like the back of my hand and love showing visitors our national treasures and sharing our culture. Honesty, flexibility, responsibility, and safety is also my motto, so if you are looking for a professional, friendly, smiling and caring guide, I look forward to showing you our Land of Sri Lanka!

I have worked with Joana in the past and being also photo interested, I know what photographers are looking for. I am aware that guiding photographers is different to guiding tourists and will make sure, that you will see so much more than the typical tourist spots. I will guide you beyond the beaten tracks.

Looking forward to show you my beautiful country!
